Tapas Story
The origins of Tapas are greatly disputed but one thing is clear, it has always been served traditionally with sherry. When the men of Andalucia went for their favourite tipple the glass would have a piece of jamon or pan (ham or bread) served on top to keep the flies off, (TAPA being the word for cover or lid).
It became more of a snack as time went on as with each drink another tapa came out and usually something different from the last time, great for the drinker and a challenge to ‘El Patron’.
Proving very popular these appetizers soon became the norm and not just with sherry, it was soon served with beer as well.
As popularity grew more people started ordering not only the small snacks but turned them into meals in Little Dishes, originally being served from 11am it was soon into the evenings from 5pm to 9pm and then later on into the night.
Fitting the Spanish lifestyle of eating, drinking and talking, Tapas was very much part of life and everywhere you will see families enjoying this style of food.
There is not much that Tapas does not include it just depends what is prepared but in the main it is the fish, vegetables, shellfish and traditional meats such as chorizo and Serrano hams which are often seen hanging above the bars.
As with everything if it is popular it soon becomes known elsewhere and Tapas is no different, travelling with a reputation that is now worldwide it is enjoyed by millions.
